How to Find a Flatmate

For some, finding a group or an individual to share a place with comes effortlessly, no stress, no hassle, a perfect household assembled without so much as a WhatsApp message… and then for the rest of us there is the task that *is* ‘finding a flatmate’.

Whether you are just looking for someone to fill a spare room in your already functional house share, or you are looking to join forces with a few people to find a new gaff altogether - the road to a filled house can be a bit of a rocky one. But it doesn't have to be. We have put together a list of a few great ways to find a flatmate that should certainly save you a bit of stress.

A decent place to start. Depending on your university they may be able to offer you a selection of other students who are also going through the same process. It can depend quite a lot on your specific university, and they may not be able to offer you anything too in-depth. Definitely worth making a visit though as you might get some inspiration.

Then students with a spare room to offer can reach out directly, tell the potential flatmate a bit more about the room that is available, and perhaps arrange a good time to view the place. You can browse through the current profiles to see who is currently looking - but if you have a specific room to share you can also list it and potential flatmates can get in contact too. It’s a great way for students to connect and find the right room and flatmate quickly and easily.

I know what you're thinking, who finds a room in the newspaper these day. And to be fair, it might not be the most productive. However, it is worth checking out your university paper as they may have a dedicated section for students who are looking for rooms or for other flatmates. Worth a look anyways.

Check out the dates of your universities next housing fair. These can be a great way of finding out what your local area has to offer and they may also have dedicated stands or activities for people looking for flatmates. The great thing is that everyone there is looking for housing or flatmates so you are sure to meet someone who could match what you are looking for. At the very least you will no doubt come away with some free merch.

There is always a chance that someone you know will either be looking or will know someone who is looking for a place to live, or someone to live with. The great thing about this is that there is already some sort of established relationship with the person - which should in theory make it easy to decide if they are a match.
